MLA stood down over alleged sexual misconduct

Johnathan Davis

ACT Greens member for Brindabella, Johnathan Davis, 31, has been reported to the police amidst allegations of sexual misconduct.

The party had been investigating complaints that the openly gay Davis separately engaged in relationships with a 17-year-old boy and a 15-year-old boy before it reported the allegations to the police.

Greens leader Shane Rattenbury says a complaint was brought to his attention at the beginning of the week, with another following shortly after.

“I immediately asked a member of my senior staff to do an initial review to establish the appropriate next steps, and I have stood Mr Davis down from his MLA duties indefinitely,” says Rattenbury.

“My office has not seen evidence of illegal activity, but we are reporting what we know of the complaints to police.”

It is understood senior party members are pressing Mr Davis to resign.

If the Member does resign from the Seat of Brindabella, who is the next highest vote candidate from the last election? If ALP, then a good run into the 2024 election for the CM, but if Liberal or Independent there may be some tantrums in the tent. And if Green, status quo and mediocrity to remain.

From what I just read, they will redistribute his preferences for the count-back. The Greens excel at the hive mind, so it would surprise me if those preferences don’t go overwhelmingly to another vacuous member of their party.

From a more up to date media report. So yes – status quo seems likely and the CM can pretend to be the “tough man” in his 120m2 ex-guvvie.

If the recount option occurs, there are two candidates from the 2020 election who look to be in contention for a spot in the Assembly, depending on whether they’re still willing to be in politics and where Mr Davis’ preferences lie.

Labor candidate Taimus Werner-Gibbings would be next in line behind Mr Davis based on votes; however, if his preferences were to go to fellow Greens candidates in the seat, then either Laura Nuttall or Sue Ellerman could be in contention.

Ms Nuttall received 1657 votes during the last election, while Ms Ellerman secured 1309. However, it’s unclear which one of them (if either) would still be interested in the job.
