Archive is alive with the sound of ‘Metal’

Arts – and lots of it – all mapped out for the week ahead by HELEN MUSA in this week’s “Artsweek” column. 

AS part of National Week of Deaf People, The National Film and Sound Archive is presenting “Sound of Metal”, a 2019 American movie starring Riz Ahmed as a metal drummer who loses his hearing, screened with open captions, a signed introduction and discussion and a virtual panel discussion after the film. Arc Cinema, September 21.

GORMAN House Arts Centre is having a “House Party”, an evening of spoken word, music, art and more, September 22. Then on September 23 they’re inviting to public to the Makers Residence Day.

UK lecturer Marie Conte-Helm will present a talk, “The Art of Japan: Highlights of Japanese Art and Culture”, for ADFAS Molonglo Plains. C3 Auditorium, 116 Monaro Street, Queanbeyan, September 21.

  • MALAYSIAN comedian Jason Leong presents “Brain Drain Selling Fast”, The Street Theatre, September 21.
  • KATE Flaherty, senior lecturer in English and Drama at the ANU is joined by Bell Shakespeare actors to examine Shakespeare’s influences. National Library, September 22.
  • BREAD Revue comedy troupe perform “Mother Doughs Best – A Sketch Comedy Show,” at Belconnen Arts Centre, September 23.
  • “DROUGHT and other Plays by Millicent Armstrong”, Yass Memorial Hall, September 22,  and Lanyon Homestead, September 24.
  • NATIONAL University Theatre Society’s “Mr Burns, A Post-Electric Play”, ANU Kambri Drama Theatre, September 27-30.

  • VICTOR Valdes and his Mariachi band appear in “Viva Mexico”, The Street Theatre, September 23.
  • THE National Capital Orchestra continues its 40th anniversary celebrations with “Hope Struggle Victory”. Albert Hall, September 24.
  • TEX Perkins plays the songs of Johnny Cash in “The Man in Black.” Canberra Theatre, September 24.
  • SCHOOL of Music staff and friends perform Frank Millward’s compositions, marking the launch of his latest album. Larry Sitsky Recital Room, September 25.
  • AN intimate ensemble of six Australian Chamber Orchestra musicians will perform “Postcards from Italy”, Llewellyn Hall, September 26.
  • TERESA Wojcik will premiere her new work in eight individual vignettes, “Celebrating Recalibrating”, Smith’s Alternative, September 26.
  • OUTSTANDING students from the piano studio of Marie Cull perform Romantic and 20th century works, Wesley Music Centre, September 27.

  • ELISA Crossing’s exhibition “Slow Looking” is at Nancy Sever Gallery, Civic, until October 8.
  • ISLA Patterson’s one-person show, “Vistas”, is at Capital Wines and Kyeema Art Gallery,  Hall.
