Dentist Dr Rebecca Sun, owner of rfg Dentistry, believes in taking the time to genuinely understand and connect with patients.
THROUGHOUT its history, rfg Dentistry has been owned and operated by female dentists who have a strong sense of empathy and passion for dentistry. As of 2019, Dr Rebecca Sun became rfg Dentistry’s principal dentist and owner.
“We have serviced the Canberra community for over 25 years, with a focus on delivering ethical, educational, and empowering care,” she says.
“What I really enjoy about my job is the amount of social contact.
“People think dentistry is very clinical and science-based, but it’s so much more than that. It’s a very social and caring profession which is what I love about it most.
“I care about my patients both in regards to their oral health and also as unique individuals. I try to remember them, especially things important to them, whether it be hobbies, significant life events, et cetera.
“I’ve had fantastic conversations surrounding philosophy and current events; for me the best part of dentistry is learning about the human beings that I am caring for. This is what drives me to want to provide exceptional service, so that care is really felt. It’s important for me to never treat my patients like a number.”
Rebecca says she’s privileged to serve the local community and enjoys the close relationships she’s forged with her patients.
“Going to work every day is a pleasure for me. I’m grateful to have genuine connections with my patients. Some of them have even invited me out for coffee, or over to their homes! It’s such a nice feeling to know that people are comfortable with me, their dentist, often a profession that scares people away!”
About one in seven Australian adults fear going to the dentist, and Rebecca says that one of the main focuses in her practice is to reduce the ‘scariness factor’.
“The first thing you’ll notice when you walk through our doors is that our dental clinic doesn’t look, smell, or feel like a dental clinic at all. It is peaceful, homely, and cosy, with floral décor, wood furnishings, and soft ambient light. We hope this helps with putting people at ease and stops white coat syndrome.”
Rebecca says the personal touch rfg provides also comes in the form of bespoke healthcare services.
“Dental care needs to be tailored to the individual. Health is unique, no two people are the same. There’s an amazing variation in genetics, diet, lifestyle, and medications, all of which can affect a person’s oral condition. It’s important to understand each patient and their situation to provide the level of care they require.”
“We spend time empowering our patients, providing them personalised advice on how to prevent oral diseases. We’re not a ‘drill, fill, bill’ type clinic,” she says.
“The more active prevention, the less need for invasive, painful, and expensive dental treatments. Wouldn’t it be great to never need a root canal treatment done?”
rfg Dentistry is looking to grow and serve more people with relaxed, friendly, gentle dentistry.
“Our practice has always done really well due to word-of-mouth referrals from loyal patients. We’re looking to expand our team, so we can serve more of the local community with the same care and philosophy that’s kept us going for the last 25 years.”
