A YOUNG girl has suffered a broken leg and facial injuries in a collision with an electric scooter with a 37-year-old NSW man charged over the incident.

Police were called to a shopping centre in Cardiff in the Hunter region on Thursday morning, after reports a man riding a scooter along a footpath had lost control before crashing into the four-year-old girl.

Police allege the man then grabbed the scooter and left the scene.

Paramedics were called and treated the girl before she was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition where she underwent surgery.

Police released CCTV footage of the man and arrested him at Belmont Police Station overnight on Friday.

He was charged with riding an electric scooter on a footpath, as well as causing grievous bodily harm by a negligent act with a vehicle.

He was granted bail to face court later this month.

Here in Canberra, it’s perfectly legal to ride on footpaths, despite the risk to pedestrians. This is a particular danger to little kids, elderly and less mobile humans who often cannot get out of the way in time. It would be really good if a relaxed leisurely walk was both possible and safe.

Sadly it will take a few deaths or serious injuries before the woke Canberra council realises the very obvious dangers of scooters colliding with pedestrians on footpaths.

They’ve had years of injuries from cyclists on footpaths, but they seem to be slow learners, or they just put the rights of cyclists first.

They put the rights of cyclists first, including on roads which are built for other vehicles who pay a road tax; it’s a Greenslabor thing which is supposed to garner votes.
