CANBERRA theatre artist Marcel Cole has carried off awards at the “Paint the Town Pink” Sydney Fringe Festival’s prize-giving ceremony on Sunday.
Cole was named winner of the Adelaide Fringe Tour-Ready Prize, and the Critical Stages Touring Development Award, both for his sellout show “The Ukulele Man”, which looks at the life of the ukulele-wielding George Formby, one of Britain’s most popular entertainers during the ’30s and ’40s.
Cole said by phone from Sydney that there is a partnership between fringe festivals in Hollywood, Perth, Adelaide and Sydney and “tour ready”, means that a show is ready to go on at another fringe festival, often with free flights and registration fees waived, although he doesn’t know the details of his win yet.
However, he does know that part of the Critical Stages Touring Development Award will be a tour in 2025.
A seasoned dancer, actor, musician, Cole also works as a comedian and runs his own “Crash, Hot Comedy Cabaret” at Smiths on the fourth Thursday of every month.
He is the son of two well-known Canberra music identities, Tobias and Katie Cole. Mum Katie arranged the music and appears as his sidekick.
