Recidivist offender caught for burglaries

A 43-year-old Duffy man, subject to an overnight curfew, has been charged in relation to burglaries in Woden town centre and Weston Creek.

At 3.15am on Wednesday police were alerted to three people attempting to break into Westfield Woden.

After gaining entry to the centre, the burglars attempted to break into a jewellery store.

At 3.30am police arrived at the shopping centre, narrowly avoiding a collision with a Ford Focus that was fleeing the scene.

Through watching CCTV, police were able to identify the 43-year-old Duffy man, who was subject to bail conditions including an overnight curfew.

At 11am police received a report that a house in Weston Creek had been broken into and property, including bank cards, had been stolen.

Police say the cards were used several times in Lyons, where CCTV footage showed the Duffy man making the purchases and leaving the scene in a Ford Focus.

At 12.30pm he allegedly committed a petrol drive-off in the Ford Focus from a Kaleen service station.

Police attended the man’s house at 9.30pm, but were refused entry as the man allegedly threatened officers.

The man surrendered to police after two hours, with police finding several items in a search of his home that were connected to the Woden and Weston burglaries.

The 43-year-old is currently on bail for other offences and had also previously been granted bail to attend to family matters.

His charges include going equipped for theft, aggravated burglary, breach of bail, unlawful possession, obstructing police, possessing an offensive weapon with intent and obtain property by deception.
