Green Shed dumped in tip recycling shock

St Vincent de Paul Society Canberra/Goulburn (Vinnies) is the new operator of the reusable facilities at Mugga Lane and Mitchell resource management centres, replacing long-time, privately owned contractor The Green Shed.

Workers of The Green Shed, which has been operating the sites for 11 years, will be offered employment by Vinnies.

“I acknowledge that the workers as well as the community may be shocked or saddened to hear of the change of provider,” says executive branch manager for ACT NoWaste, Dr Margaret Kitchin.

In acknowledging the contributions and services provided by The Green Shed over the past decade, Dr Kitchin said they were a familiar and “much loved” provider of reusable goods, but didn’t touch on the reasons for them losing the contact.

The new contract starts on May 31 for an initial service term of four years with possible extensions up to another two years.

The impact of this on the community is huge, so where was the consultation before this decision was made? It is the community who benefit / lose on such decisions, yet this government does not consult people, nor do they give good reasons for terminating long-standing contracts that have served the community well. Why won’t they explain their rationale? This secretive and autocratic local government are not serving our community well.

Since when has any government consulted on a procurement process?

Because that ultimately was what it was. The contract was up for renewal, and the Government rightfully tested the market. Whether the decision is the ‘optimal’ one is a different question, but don’t conflate nonsense. For instance, they haven’t terminated any contract.

People whinge that governments take too long to do things. Imagine if every procurement process had to have a consultation process associated with it. Nothing would truly get done.

This is the worst decision ever in my opinion. The Green Shed was a lovely space to rummage and find what you need and get it for a reasonable price. I am so disappointed in this government. It’s beyond the pale! Handing it over to Vinnies to put their ‘curated’ colour coordinated spin on everything and charge ridiculous prices is a crime. I suppose the wonderful Green Shed shop in Civic will also go!!! It beggars belief this decision. I’m outraged and want to see the details of how this was allowed to happen. What was the reasoning to abandon a perfectly good business who gave to charity and set up the whole thing and is so well loved by the community. Something doesn’t smell right to me. Anne

It is a contract change not a closing down. The new contractor would have been chosen on the basis of ‘best value for money’. So it is quite possible ‘customers’ will see and get better value.
