‘Lost’ frogs sighted for first time in five years

Northern Corroboree Frogs have been detected in Ginini Flats at the Namadgi National Park.

For the first time in five years, Northern Corroboree Frogs have been detected in Ginini Flats at the Namadgi National Park.

The ACT government says the sighting of 37 frogs has lifted hopes for the future of the critically endangered species, in rapid decline because of fungal outbreaks and the impact of climate change on their habitat.

Earlier this year, ecologists discovered 16 male Northern Corrobboree Frogs calling at the Ginini Flats Wetland Complex Ramsar Site and 21 frogs in a lower elevation site in Namadgi, where frogs and eggs had been released.

Every year for more than a decade, attempts have been made to restore the Northern Corroboree Frog population by releasing frogs and eggs into the wild.
