Severe thunderstorms forecast for east of ACT

Yellow shows the area likely to be affected by severe thunderstorms.
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for large hailstones, damaging winds and heavy rainfall, moving towards the east of the ACT.

BoM says an unstable airmass and an upper wave combine with a surface convergence zone to generate severe thunderstorms on Tuesday afternoon.

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce large hailstones, damaging winds and heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding in the warning area over the next several hours.

Locations which may be affected include Cooma, Glen Davis, Bilpin, Captains Flat, Bredbo and Nimmitabel.

The ACT State Emergency Service advises people to:

  • Move cars under cover and away from trees;
  • Secure or put away loose items;
  • Keep at least eight metres away from fallen power lines;
  • Stay indoors away from windows;
  • Never drive, walk or ride through floodwater.
