Obama finally meets his Canberra tree

US PRESIDENT Barack Obama’s visit has created one of the capital’s biggest stirs of the year.

At one of his exclusive appearances, our snapper SILAS BROWN was invited today to capture some special moments at the US Embassy where the President unveiled a plaque for a White Oak tree (the official tree of the US State of Illinois) dedicated by the President to the embassy grounds.

The tree was scheduled to be planted during his first proposed visit in March last year, however despite the cancelled visit, the tree was planted. He was also scheduled to visit Australia in June, 2010, on both occasions at the invitation of former PM Kevin Rudd.

President Obama is the fifth president to visit Australia and the fourth president to dedicate a tree on the embassy grounds. He follows trees dedications from First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, Presidents George Bush Snr and George Bush Jnr.
