A NATIONAL memorial that commemorates the service and sacrifice of Australia’s First Nations peoples in the protection of country has won the Nicholas Murcutt Award for Small Project Architecture at the 2020 Australian Institute of Architects’ National Architecture Awards live-streamed tonight (November 5).

“For Our Country” by Kudjla/Gangalu artist Daniel Boyd in collaboration with Edition Office, was praised by the judges as “a simple concept, expertly executed with precision and clarity while concealing a degree of complexity in thinking not immediately apparent”.

They also commented that the task of adequately acknowledging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander diggers, within the shadows of the Australian War Memorial, had brought with it much responsibility.

A second project in the ACT, the Campbell Section 5 Master Plan by Hill Thalis Architecture + Urban Projects of NSW, won a National Award for Urban Design.

“This ambitious urban project, encompassing five new streets and blocks, landscaped squares and a major new three-hectare green space… has transformed this previously degraded corner of Campbell into a vibrant urban neighbourhood,” the jury said.

But the two projects were the only ones from Canberra among 44 from across the country to be recognised in the awards program, 25 with national awards and 19 with commendations, out of an original field of more than 800 entries.

The jury was headed up by Professor Helen Lochhead, joined on by Jefa Greenaway, Jennie Officer, Kerry Clare and Tim Greer.
