AN archaeological dig has delayed work at the site of a soon to be built state-of-the-art regional sports complex at Jerrabomberra.

Early site works for the $4.2 million complex — at the former Fraser Park speedway site at south Jerrabomberra — are complete but further work has halted due to Aboriginal archaeological survey work, a Queanbeyan Palerang Regional Council (QPRC) spokesperson said.

“There have been delays due to Aboriginal archaeological survey work required by NSW Heritage, however, archaeologists are onsite this week and the dig is progressing well,” the spokesperson said.

“The survey is expected to be completed by Friday (July 30) and is required before the DA [development application] can progress to the Regional Planning Panel.”

Construction of stage one of QPRC’s regional sports complex will include four football and two hockey pitches, warm up ovals, club rooms and a car park.

Proposed future stages include a four court indoor basketball, netball, futsal and hockey facility and an aquatic centre.

Once built, the complex will be capable of hosting state and national sporting events, and is a part of a $140 million major works program being rolled out by QPRC in 2021-22.
