THE Australian Monarchist League (AML) has slammed the federal government for disallowing the public from attending Queen Elizabeth II’s Commemorative Service at Parliament House this Thursday (September 22).

In a statement released yesterday, the league says that everyday Australians will be “locked out” of participating in the service which will be held on the national day of mourning in the Great Hall of Parliament House.
While the event is invitation only, the public will be allowed to watch on a screen from a distance. The event will also be broadcast around the country from 11am, beginning with a minute of silence.
This decision comes despite the Prime Minister’s Department earlier stating that members of the public would be invited, according to the league.
AML National Chair Phillip Benwell said the “ignominious” move was of a pattern of recent decisions limiting the ability of everyday Australians to celebrate the reign of Queen Elizabeth.
“It is well and good for the Prime Minister to jet to London and have photo opportunities with world leaders; now let the people, who always came first with Her late Majesty, celebrate and remember their servant Queen,” said Benwell.
“The Australian Monarchist League calls on the Commonwealth Government to allow the maximum possible participation of the Australian public in the National Commemorative Service.”
The government similarly attracted the ire of the AML earlier this year when they disallowed the public from attending the official celebrations of the Queens’ Platinum Jubilee in Canberra.
