A MAN has been arrested for allegedly stealing a car from a home in Bruce, driving it down the wrong side of the road, causing two collisions and threatening arson.
About 2.15pm yesterday (October 5) the 24-year-old man stole a white Toyota Landcruiser from Bruce, before driving it on the wrong side of Caswell Drive.
Soon after, the Landcruiser collided with vehicles on the Tuggeranong Parkway and in Kent Street before the driver stopped the vehicle in a playground in Strangways Street, Curtin, just after 3pm.
The man then allegedly took a jerry can from a nearby garage and stated he was going to set the vehicle alight, but when confronted by a passer-by, the man left the playground in the Landcruiser before entering a Curtin residence, where he was told to leave by the homeowner.
Shortly afterwards, officers from Operation Toric located the Landcruiser in Parker Street, Curtin, and arrested the man a short distance away.
The man will appear in the ACT Magistrates Court today, charged with aggravated burglary, taking a motor vehicle without consent, dangerous driving, not leaving particulars after a crash, providing a false name or address, and threatening to commit arson.
Operation Toric is continuing to target dangerous driving and stolen vehicles across the ACT. Since it began operation in August more than 70 apprehensions have occurred and more than 220 charges have been laid.
