DUE to flooding and high levels of rain forecast, some closures are in place at Namadgi National Park today (October 6).
The visitor information centre and Point Hut Crossing are both closed until further notice, and further closures across parks and reserves may occur over the coming days.
ACT Conservator of Flora and Fauna Bren Burkevics said the decision has been made for the safety of the community.
“We are advising all Canberrans to avoid these areas as we see heavy rain and extreme weather continue over the coming days and weekend,” Burkevics said.
“Flood waters can occur suddenly and without much warning, leaving you trapped or stranded if you are unprepared.
“If anyone is visiting our parks and reserves, please take all possible precautions to stay safe. This includes telling family or friends where you are going, take extra care around trees and other debris, and steer clear of low-lying areas such as creeks, stormwater drains and other causeways.”
The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has forecast lighter showers this afternoon, along with some light winds.
Tomorrow is expected to bring a thunderstorm, with rain expected to last across the weekend, and set to ease on Monday.
Additional Namadgi closures will be supplied here.
