More murray cod and golden perch for lakes

ACT fish stocking.

TO relieve fishing pressure and conserve native species, the ACT government has released a five-year draft fish stocking plan.

It says the proposed plan is set to offer greater protection to native fish, improve catchment health and maintain viable recreational fishing locations for the community.

Increase in fishing pressures, combined with declining fish populations have led to regulation upgrades including take limits for golden perch, restricted areas for murray cod, and classifications of trout waters and prohibited waters.

The proposed stocking plan – set to cost about $25,000 a year – will guide murray cod and golden perch into Lake Ginninderra, Lake Tuggeranong, Gungahlin Pond and Yerrabi Pond.

Since 2011, a total of 734,118 cod and perch have been stocked into ACT urban lakes.
