WA riesling wins top trophy at Challenge awards

Chief Steward Brian Sinclair checks the wine show layout.

OUT of more than 400 rieslings from six countries, a wine from Western Australia has been crowned the best at the 21st Canberra International Riesling Challenge.

The 2022 Singlefile Great Southern Riesling from Singlefile Winery in Western Australia won best wine, best dry riesling and best Australian riesling.

The trophy for the best riesling from the Canberra district was won by Mount Majura Vineyard with its 2022 Mount Majura Vineyard Riesling.

This year, 408 wines from 180 wineries were entered from Australia, New Zealand, the US, Germany, France, and Austria.

The judging took place at the Albert Hall, with the number of entries “pleasing” given the event’s two year absence due to the pandemic.

“The 2022 Canberra International Riesling Challenge remains the largest in the Southern Hemisphere,” chairman of judges Cameron Douglas said.

“Our first challenge since COVID-19 forced a two-year break, but we’re back and with more than 400 entries proving this is still a serious competition that showcases many fine examples.”

Andrew Kenny from Kenny Wines in South Australia won the Toyota Material Handling Encouragement Award for up-and-coming riesling winemakers.
