ACT Opposition Leader, Elizabeth Lee, has announced she is pregnant with her second child.

Lee’s deputy Jeremy Hanson will lead the Canberra Liberals during her maternity leave.

Lee – who has a three-year-old daughter Mia with husband Nathan Hansford – said she plans to have a couple of months’ off after the baby’s birth in April, and be back on board for the budget in June.

“At this point, looking at the due date, which is April, I am seeing if I can get back in time for the budget in the first week of June but it will all be subject to what happens with the pregnancy, babies tend to operate on their own timetable,” Lee said.

“It will definitely be a juggling act. I have done it before, not in the same role and there will be different challenges but I am grateful for the support of my family and colleagues.”

Lee – a former lawyer – has been has been Opposition leader for two years.

Although “over the moon”, Lee said it’s been a nerve-racking time having suffered from two miscarriages.

“There have been a lot of circumstances that are stacked up against us having had two miscarriages last year but to bypass the milestone in terms of when those happened and then again at 12 weeks is a big relief,” she said.

“And my heart goes out to many families who have faced the same heartache as us. We’ve been there; we know and we share your pain.”
