Accused murderer ‘threw elderly man from balcony’

By Fraser Barton in Brisbane

A MAN charged with murdering an elderly resident by allegedly throwing him off a balcony had been aggressively going door-to-door at the unit complex, police say.

Officers attended the residence on School Road in Yeronga about 1.40pm on Sunday after reports of a disturbance.

Police allege the 49-year-old Brisbane man, who is not a resident of the complex, had been “aggressively seeking items” from units before knocking on the door of the alleged victim and his partner.

A disagreement occurred not long after the 74-year-old answered the door, before he was picked up and thrown off the balcony head-first and fell 3.5 metres to concrete below, police say.

The 74-year-old was rushed to hospital but died late on Sunday.

Police arrested the 49-year-old shortly after the incident at a nearby unit. He has been charged with one count of murder and will appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday.

Detective Superintendent Andrew Massingham described the alleged attack as “unprovoked, callous and heartless on an elderly man enjoying a Sunday afternoon with his wife”.

Police are still interviewing residents of the housing block as investigations continue.
