THE almost 180-year-old Bungendore Show has been unable to overcome the hurdle of a lack of volunteers, cancelling for the second year running only a matter of days before it was advertised to take place.
Having first started in the 1840s, on being called off in 2022 due to severe weather, there was much anticipation for its recommencement on Sunday, October 22.
Planned events included a return of the popular Memorial Tug-of-War “commemorating the life and community service of Lt-Col Jack Fletcher GM”.
However, this week organisers stated in a Facebook announcement a decision to cancel was made with “regret”.
“We apologise to the community but the show relies entirely on a volunteer workforce and we unfortunately do not have enough volunteers this year”, the organisers wrote.
Also noted were difficulties that arose during the pandemic and with the original January date being moved to October.
In response to some claims community members were unaware more help was needed and suggestions of insufficient promotion, organisers pointed to earlier social media posts requesting extra assistance.
More positively, overcoming the challenge of finding a horse steward, it’s been confirmed horse ring events will go ahead as planned on Sunday.
