ACT Greens Municipal Services spokesperson Andrew Braddock is calling for community ideas on expanding Canberra’s libraries beyond traditional book lending and opening hours.

Mr Braddock says options could include after-hours self-access, smaller neighbourhood library points, spaces for making and repairing items and “Libraries of Things”, where equipment can be borrowed rather than bought.

He points to libraries elsewhere in Australia offering equipment such as telescopes and podcasting kits, as well as access to 3D printers, laser cutters and recording facilities.

“Canberra should start thinking about the future of our libraries and how they reflect the way people live, learn, work, and connect,” Mr Braddock says.

The call follows a campaign against reduced weekend library access, including a petition signed by more than 3500 people. Restoring weekend services at Kippax and Erindale was also among the Greens’ priorities during their recent confidence and supply negotiations with Labor.

Mr Braddock says Canberra’s libraries could draw on international examples such as Helsinki’s Oodi Library, which provides equipment and facilities including 3D printers, sewing machines, workstations and recording spaces.

“If we want libraries that remain relevant for the next generation, we need to think beyond books and opening hours and build services around how people actually live, learn, and connect,” he says.
