The ACT’s 2026-27 bushfire season begins today, with Canberrans being urged to prepare their households for bushfires and other emergencies.

The ACT’s 2026-27 bushfire season begins today, with Canberrans being urged to prepare their households for bushfires and other emergencies.

From October 1, Fire Danger Ratings will be published daily and permits will be required for open-air burning, while Total Fire Bans may be declared when conditions warrant.

The ACT Emergency Services Agency has also launched its CHAT. PLAN. ACT. campaign, encouraging Canberrans to discuss emergency risks, make a plan and know what action to take.

Police, Fire and Emergency Services Minister Marisa Paterson says the campaign is designed to make emergency preparation simpler for households.

“CHAT. PLAN. ACT. gives Canberrans a simple place to start, breaking preparedness into manageable steps that can make all the difference when an emergency happens,” Dr Paterson says.
