Sections of Northbourne Avenue will close over two weekends in October, with buses replacing all light rail services for another weekend as construction continues on the extension to Commonwealth Park.
Northbourne Avenue will close in both directions between Vernon Circle and Cooyong Street/Barry Drive from 8pm Friday, October 16, to 6am Monday, October 19, and again from 8pm Friday, October 23, to 6am Monday, October 26.
Local access will be maintained between Alinga Street and Cooyong Street/Barry Drive.
A further southbound closure between Bunda Street and Alinga Street is scheduled from 1am to 5am on Sunday, November 1.
Light rail services between Alinga Street and Gungahlin Place will be replaced by buses for the entire weekend of October 31-November 1, with replacement services stopping at every light rail stop and operating at approximately the same or better frequency.
Passengers will not need to tap on or off replacement buses, although normal fares and tap-on requirements will apply when connecting to other bus services.
Commonwealth Avenue northbound will also be reduced to one lane between Albert Street and Vernon Circle during upcoming works. Regular Transport Canberra bus services will continue without diversions, although pedestrian crossing closures near Alinga Street may affect transfers at City Interchange.
Motorists and passengers are urged to allow extra travel time, particularly as the works coincide with the Commonwealth Avenue Bridge Renewal project.
The works will support the partial reopening of London Circuit East in coming weeks. Main construction is expected to finish in early 2027, with light rail services to the new city stops scheduled to begin in early 2028.
Further information on road closures is available at ACT travel impacts, with replacement bus details at Transport Canberra.
