Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council has voted to ban AI smart glasses at its aquatic centres over concerns about privacy and the potential for discreet filming and recording.
The council says the devices can capture video, photographs and audio without other people being aware.
Mayor Kenrick Winchester says the ban is intended to protect visitors, particularly children, in places where people expect privacy.
“While I recognise this technology has legitimate uses, including for people who need accessibility and disability support, it also raises important privacy and child safety concerns,” he says.
The council already has rules governing photography and filming at its facilities but says emerging wearable technology requires clearer restrictions.
Conditions of entry and signage at council aquatic centres will be updated to reflect the ban.
