Wild and wonderful dance is here

THE “You Are Here” festival is winding up its wild and wonderful program this weekend with a line-up that includes a dance organisers are calling “quirky and quality.”

Tonight, Friday, at 6pm and 7 pm at Fletcher Jones, cnr Northbourne Ave and London Circuit, you can see “Air Kiss,” created for Canberra Dance Theatre’s fabulous GOLD company by Tasmanian choreographer Glen Murray, artistic director of MADE (Mature Artist Dance Experience).

Later tonight, at 9pm and 10:30 pm on the Fletcher Jones corner, is a performance by “No Lights No Lycra,” a dance community that started in Melbourne by self-styled “unruly dance students,” Alice Glenn and Heidi Barrett in 2009. There is no light, no lycra, no teacher, no steps to learn, no technique, just free movement.

Then tomorrow, Saturday, at 5pm and 6pm, also on Fletcher Jones’ corner, you can see “PANE,” which is an installation choreography by Murray.

As you’d expect, the “You Are Here” people are not going quietly, announcing, “According to rumour the Centenary of Canberra goes all the way through the year to December 2013, but as far as we’re concerned it all ends tonight. Everything: the festival, the centenary, the world itself.”

Either to prove that or disprove it they’re throwing a huge after-party to which you’re all invited, starting at 10 pm in The Watch House, Garema Place and going to around 2 am.

Canberra’s “You Are Here” festival in the Canberra CBD until March 23. All events are free.
