SOUTH African photographer Garth Lezard is nearing the end of a 30,000 km bicycle ride around the world, and he’ll be in Canberra this week.
By cycling solo across 24 countries on six continents, Lezard hopes to raise money to support a home in Durban for people with disabilities, run by international non-profit organisation Leonard Cheshire Homes and Services.
This morning, when “CityNews” calls, Lezard is about 30 km from Goulburn, riding down the Hume Highway, and expects to get into the capital late tomorrow afternoon.
He began the two-and-a-half-year journey in December 2010, and is now in the middle of his final continent, Oceania, where the countries on his list include Samoa, Fiji, Australia and New Zealand.
To give the journey structure, Lezard has been visiting the homes of various cricket and rugby teams, trying to enlist their support for his cause and if possible, meet their players.
“What brings me to Canberra is the ACT Brumbies,” he says over the sound of trucks going past.
He will ask if he can meet some of the Brumbies players and take photos, hopefully at a training session, and see if the team is willing to donate any memorabilia he can auction off for the charity.
Who can be trusted?
In a world of spin and confusion, there’s never been a more important time to support independent journalism in Canberra.
If you trust our work online and want to enforce the power of independent voices, I invite you to make a small contribution.
Every dollar of support is invested back into our journalism to help keep citynews.com.au strong and free.
Thank you,
