SALLY Greenaway is a well known composer in the Canberra music scene.
The musical director for ConneXion Big Band and a member of Wicked-Strings, which features musicians from the Canberra Symphony Orchestra, she lectures part-time at the Canberra Institute of Technology’s Music Industry Centre.
In 2012 Greenaway composed and recorded the music soundtrack by for the short film trailer ‘The Invisible Thread’ by James Hunter, commissioned as part of the anthology edited by Irma Gold and published by Halstead Press of writing by Canberra region writers spanning 100 years.
She’s one of four composers (the others are Lachlan Hughes, Harry Sdraulig and Samuel Smith) chosen to be featured in the Australian Youth Orchestra Composers’ Concert tomorrow, Friday, at Llewellyn Hall. The orchestra includes players from the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.
Greenaway says, “My piece continues in my usual tradition of beautiful melodies and harmonies, with film and jazz influences – but I’ve really pushed myself hard to try many new concepts and techniques and I really think my music is better for it. I’ve really tried to create enchantment and imagery.”
Her favourite element in the new work is “Nordic Triumph!” of which Greenaway says, “you’ll have to come to the concert to know what this means.”
She says she struggled with writer’s block but that “the piece ended up faithfully writing itself in a day over the course of 17 hours straight.”
Australian Youth Orchestra Composers’ Concert, 5.30pm Friday, January 17, Llewellyn Hall, free entry.
