A newish restaurant in the city, takes a fresh, creative and artisan approach to Indian cuisine, says dining reviewer WENDY JOHNSON.

Amara’s menu features dishes that are both modern and steeped in Indian tradition. The focus is just as much on presentation as it is the secret mixing of hand-ground and carefully sourced spices to create deep and exotic flavours.

A house speciality is the dosai and we ordered ours with a spiced ground lama masala filling (mini size $13 and regular $26). The crepe was slightly crispy and wonderfully thin. It was served hot with two dips, one cooler than the other. We were encouraged to dip our dosai into both before indulging, which we did, appreciating the advice.

At a lively event onstage at the Causeway Hall in Kingston, ACT Hub unveiled an ambitious season of 11 productions and a mini-festival of plays on Thursday evening.

Theatre followers will recall that in April 2022, the hall became home to Everyman Theatre, Chaika Theatre and Free-Rain Theatre Company, coming together as an independent performance team that has quickly come to prominence in the local theatre scene.

The 2025 line-up includes a new Australian family drama, a Lorca classic, ACT Hub’s first Shakespeare, a co-production and return seasons of two former successes for Everyman Theatre.

Canberra’s Dragons Abreast is the longest-runnin

Canberra’s Dragons Abreast is the longest-running breast cancer survivors’ paddling team in Australia.

It’s celebrating 25 years advocating for breast cancer awareness and therapeutically paddling a 22-seat dragon boat.

“It’s a support group without being a support group,” said breast cancer survivor and club event co-ordinator Jeannie Cotterell.

“We don’t talk about cancer very often.

“‘You have cancer’ is a really interesting three words to hear, and you know that the people around you have all heard those words and know what that feels like.”

Rescheduled from its original performance date of November 3, this was, as expected, another excellent concert from the @australianstringquartet, writes reviewer SARAH BYRNE.

Current incumbents Dale Barltrop (first violin), Francesca Hiew (second violin), and Chris Cartlidge (viola) were joined by guest cellist, the outstanding Charlotte Miles, a serene and unflappable locum for the exuberant Michael Dahlenburg.

The ASQ is the beneficiary of an extraordinary collection of 19th century instruments by Guadagnini, and I was particularly struck by their utterly glorious tone, the first violin (“Turin”) especially sounding with uncommon sweetness.
