Blood spat at police

A MAN spat blood and saliva into the eyes and mouths of two police officers in the early hours of Sunday morning outside a Canberra nightclub.

The female and male officer were tested for potential exposure to viruses/pathogens, and will be monitored for ongoing potential health risks.

The incident happened around 2.15am on Sunday morning when two police officers approached a small group causing a disturbance on Alinga Street. One man was bleeding profusely from his nose.

The man acted aggressively towards the officers and bystanders and refused police directions.

Police said when the officers attempted to take him into custody for a breach of the peace, the man deliberately spat blood and saliva at the eyes and mouths of two officers.

The 28-year-old Dunlop man was charged with three counts of causing harm to a Commonwealth public official, and one of obstructing a Commonwealth official.

The man was given Watch House bail yesterday, and will appear in the ACT Magistrates Court on August 8.
