First glimpse of Gungahlin pool

ARTIST impressions of the new Gungahlin Leisure Centre will be on display today from 4pm to 7pm at the Gungahlin Marketplace.

Deputy Chief Minister Andrew Barr said the plans will be refined over the next few months with today’s display a great opportunity for Gungahlin residents to look at what is proposed and have their say.

“Members of the design team, as well as staff from Sport and Recreation, will be on hand to answer questions and listen to comments,” Mr Barr said.

“Over the last two years a feasibility study into the centre has been undertaken, including an analysis of the area’s demographics and the recreational needs both now and into the future.”

Mr Barr said during the study, consultations were conducted with the Gungahlin Community Council and Gungahlin residents, and based on those consultations a concept for the centre was developed.

Features of the centre include: a 50 metre eight-lane pool; a 25 metre secondary pool plus other water areas for a range of activities including learn to swim and water play; a gymnasium; dry fitness rooms; a cafe; and childcare facilities.

Construction is expected to commence by mid 2012 and completed in early 2014.
