Police nab pair on shopping centre roof

AN 18-year-man and a 17-year-old youth were taken into custody early this morning and charged with trespass after they were arrested on the roof of the Kippax Shopping Centre.

Around 1.10am the pair had visited a convenience store in Holt, then were later seen on the roof of a nearby building, allegedly throwing rocks and broken roof tiles.

Police attended but were unable to find the offenders involved.

Around 2.50am, police received a second report of offenders on the roof of the Kippax Shopping Centre throwing rocks and broken roof tiles at passing vehicles. A police officer gained access to the roof and took the pair into custody.

The 17-year-old from north Canberra has been charged with two counts of trespass and one of theft, while the 18-year-old from Cook was charged with two counts of trespass.

They will appear in court at a later date when further charges of property damage are likely.

Any witnesses who have not yet spoken to police are urged to do so. Police specifically wish to contact the anonymous caller who first reported the trespassers on the roof of the Kippax Shopping Centre. All witnesses are urged to call 1800 333 000 or via the website on www.act.crimestoppers.com.au.
