Review: you’ve got to wonder

THEATRE

“The Mousetrap”

By Agatha Christie, directed by Jordan Best, designed by Brian Sudding, The Q, Queanbeyan, until March 24.

OUT of curiosity, people might wonder what made “The Mousetrap” so successful in England. Any play that can run for 60 years obviously has something going for it!

With the English theatre achievements still providing the impetus for much of what is presented in Australia, “The Mousetrap” must have seemed like an obvious choice for theatre presentation in Queanbeyan.

The joy in the play is found in the qualities of the various characters, however the performers need to be highly skilled in character portrayal and only Jim Adamik (Mr Paravicini) and Liz Bradley (Mrs Boyle) displayed the necessary capabilities to breathe life into the work. They brought a presence that could fill The Q with the necessary mystery and tension.

It was jarring at times when the production worked against the style and the extraordinary set that were so reminiscent of its 1950s genre. So much so, that people must still be wondering what made the play so successful!
