Tuggeranong takes a shine to monorail

TUGGERANONG Community Council has put their hand up to claim the Sydney monorail that’s being dismantled by the NSW Government.

TCC president Darryl Johnston said the announcement provided an opportunity for Canberra to have an alternative public transport system.

He said the monorail could be purchased at a fraction of the cost and re-erected, possibly linking Tuggeranong to Civic via the Monaro Highway.

However the suggestion might be wishful thinking on TCC’s part, with the Tasmanian Government already showing their keen interest in the monorail.

“Unlike the Sydney monorail route that was aimed at tourists, this would be a regular commuter service,” Mr Johnston said.

“It is not such a fanciful idea because other cities, such as Hobart, have already expressed an interest in purchasing the Sydney monorail.

“The TCC believes Canberra must start laying the foundations for a rail based mass public transport system linking Tuggeranong to Civic, Queanbeyan and the other major town centres.

“The monorail could be the beginning.”
