Wild winds prompt calls for help

THE ACT State Emergency Service received 44 calls for help after strong winds reaching 100km per hour last night.

The majority of the calls came from the north side of the city for fallen trees and branches which were responded to by ACTSES units and ACT Fire and Rescue firefighters.

Meanwhile, ActewAGL reported their crews are currently repairing damage to the electricity network as a result of last night’s wild weather.

General Manager Networks Services Rob Atkin confirmed that over the course of the night the electricity supply was interrupted to over 2,900 customers, affecting parts of Curtin, Deakin, Evatt, Fadden, Flynn, Florey, Frazer, Holder, Kaleen, Kambah, Mawson, Melba, Page, Spence and Weetangera.

“From 9.15pm last night to 4.00am this morning ActewAGL crews responded to 13 jobs, two prolonged interruptions involving high voltage lines that affected 2,600 customers and 11 separate incidents on lower voltage lines that affected 375 customers,” he says.

“The interruptions were mainly caused by trees contacting with powerlines as a result of strong winds during the storms.”
