Suspicious fires lit in Calwell

TWO suspicious fires were lit outside a shopping complex in Calwell late last night, prompting a call for witnesses from police.

About 10.20pm police were called to to the scene of a fire outside the Calwell shops after firefighters deemed the fire as being intentionally lit.

A short time later, police were told of another fire in a rubbish skip at the rear of the shopping complex. Both fires were extinguished by firefighters.

Acting Superintendent Daryl Neit says both fires caused minimal damage and there was no structural damage to the building, but the reckless act is dangerous and potentially life threatening.

“People need to be aware that lighting fires is a serious matter,” he says.

“Police patrol shopping centers and if we catch someone deliberately lighting a fire and putting life and property at risk, they should expect to be charged and put before the court.”

Anyone who may have witnessed these incidents, or who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously in the area around the Calwell Shops, should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
