Eastman inquiry to rumble on, Eastman stays in prison

supreme court

TWO judgments out of the Supreme Court this afternoon see the status quo maintained and the inquiry into David Eastman’s conviction for the murder of Police Commissioner Colin Winchester ongoing.

Chief Justice Murrell has refused the applications of the Director of Public Prosecutions to kill off the inquiry writing:

At this late stage, having regard to the inordinate delay and the considerable work the board of inquiry has carried out, the personal and financial investment in that work and the matters the board has uncovered, we are of the opinion that it is in the interests of justice that the inquiry take its course and the board complete its investigation.

Meanwhile David Eastman’s application for freedom pending the conclusion of the inquiry has also failed, with the Chief Justice writing that “no error or breach of procedural fairness has been established”.
