New residents urged to update address

THE ACT government has called on new Canberrans to update their residential details with Medicare between now and March 2 to  increase the ACT’s share of GST revenue. Canberra

Chief Minister Katy Gallagher says the Medicare Update Your Address Campaign is important for the Australian Bureau of Statistics who use Medicare data to calculate population figures as well as increase the ACT’s share of GST revenue; more than $7.65 million in extra GST revenue has been generated by the previous five campaigns.

“For every year that an ACT resident is not counted, the ACT Government forgoes over $2,500 in GST funding,” Ms Gallagher says.

“The ACT Government invests public money across a range of important public services and these facilities or services are used by those who reside within the Territory. Therefore it is important we have an accurate picture of how many people live in the ACT and also to ensure we receive the correct amount of GST revenue.”

From January 25 to March 2, anyone who updates their Medicare address after moving to Canberra from interstate will be eligible to enter a competition to win $10,000.

The competition closes at midnight on March 2.
