THE Australian War Memorial’s refurbished café has been officially opened and re-named Poppy’s in memory of Trooper David ‘Poppy’ Pearce.
Prime Minister Tony Abbott joined the Chief of Defence Force, Air Marshal Mark Binskin AO, for the ceremony today.
Trooper Pearce joined the army as a mature age soldier and because he was older, he was affectionately nicknamed Poppy. David ‘Poppy’ Pearce was killed while serving in Afghanistan in 2007.
He was a popular and well-respected member of his regiment which named the café at the multinational base at Tarin Kowt, Afghanistan, Poppy’s in his honour.
