A quick test drive of Civic’s free wifi

WITH the Chief Minister announcing her free wifi project today we’re also getting an afternoon of free wifi in Garema Place.

Standing up at the bus Interchange sure enough “CBRfree WiFi” was an option with five bars available.

It ran pretty much down to the merry-go-round on City Walk.

Connection is one touch, no password.

So convenience is there and it was snappy on my phone.

The problem with unsecured networks is that every user can sniff all the data of all the other users.

PC World ran an article last year on the attendant perils.

I’d advise against it for 100 megabytes a day.

For general stuff like Facebook, Gmail or Twitter you should be OK as they all use https (SSL) but be wary of say logging into ANY site that does not have some sort of encryption layer. I used it myself briefly today too and was impressed by the speed – as good as being at home. Obviously at home my network is secured.
