Parties at the Shops bringing science to Kaleen

ON Saturday 17 October from 10am-2pm, Kaleen Shops will be celebrating the things that make the suburb a much-loved place to live, and few people are more excited than renowned science communicator, Dr Graham Walker, who will be performing at the event.

Graham spends his life travelling the globe teaching people about science in fun, interactive ways. It’s a career that allows him the freedom to live anywhere in the world, and he chooses to come home to Kaleen. It’s where he was raised, but the performer loves it for many other reasons.

“I’ve been living in Kaleen on and off since I was really little and I love the place. Even though I could be working anywhere in the world with what I do, and often do, where would I walk my dogs, chat to my local butcher, or get such a beautifully big block to indulge my gardening passions and science stuff hoarding? It’s so rad a bunch of my friends have moved to Kaleen too, so more reasons to stay. I even have a K hand signal in its honour!”

“I really like the local shops. It’s good to see it growing with cute little cafes opening and the butchers being renewed. There’s a nice community feel too; older gents chatting on a Saturday morning and every third trip you bump into someone and catch up… it’s a friendly place – my dog once broke its leash and ran inside and everyone just greeted it. Kalo Kalo Kalo!” said Graham.

For his home-turf show, Graham is pulling out all the crowd favourites.

“I’ll be giving the Kaleen crowd a selection of my most fun and exciting science experiments and can promise I’ll be making the most of the outdoor venue and the lack of a roof – the big teddy bear cannon and teddy bear volcano will definitely be there, along with liquid nitrogen, hydrogen gas, and a raft of other A-list science action. We’ll be learning about pressure, chemistry, states of matter and heaps of other science, but what I really hope people will learn, or rather discover, is that science is a wondrous, fun and awe inspiring thing – it’s a party not a lesson!”

Also entertaining crowds will be live music by Ben Drysdale, giant Jenga, and a letter writing station where letters are posted directly to Santa.

There will be a special appearance from famous local resident Forrest Gump the Llapaca (llama crossed with alpaca).

The Llapaca, Forrest Gump, is well-known for providing emotional care for hospice and nursing home residents throughout Canberra. So people can come and have a therapeutic hug with Canberra’s cuddliest care-giver.

And crowds can sample a range of tasty treats at a food fair presented by Supabarn, and the Kaleen retailers will be on hand to serve delicious coffee, cakes and lunch all day long.
