TEMPO Theatre is up to its usual murderous shenanigans with the terrifying comedy-thriller “Deathtrap”, written by Ira Levin (author of “Rosemary’s Baby” and “The Boys from Brazil”). Failing murder-mystery playwright Sidney Bruhl crosses swords with the clever, emerging playwright Clifford Anderson and the plot thickens. UNSINKABLE Toby Cole recently turned on a swishy behind-the-scenes launch of his new artistic company “Handel in the Theatre” at The Playhouse. Now it’s time for Handel fans to fork out. Thanks to Creative Partnerships Australia’s “MATCH” program, donations to his crowd-funding campaign will be matched dollar for dollar, assuming he reaches the target of $10,000. ONE of Australia’s best known “Phantom of the Opera” actors, Michael Cormick (he played the role here a couple of years back), will be at Vivaldi’s on Mother’s Day to croon romantic songs from shows such as “Phantom” and “Les Miserables”. He’ll be accompanied by Canberra-raised pianist James Court.

THE late Pete Smith, first general manager of M16 at its former home at Mildura Street, Fyshwick, was an accomplished artist whose work won the Phoenix Prize for Spiritual Art in 2007. Now curator Jacque Schultze has put together a huge exhibition marking the first anniversary of Smith’s death across three M16 spaces at Blaxland Crescent, Griffith, that runs until May 22. All works are for sale and proceeds will go towards emerging artists at M16.

THE artistic director of the Australian Ballet, David McAllister, will join the National Portrait Gallery collection in a newly-commissioned portrait taken by Australian photographer, Peter Brew-Bevan. The portrait will form part of a larger project to recognise the contribution of dance in Australia.

THE ANU Music Society is holding an end of semester concert featuring the Society Orchestra, Concert Band and Jazz Band performing heroic favourites, ranging from “The Pirates of the Caribbean” to Beethoven’s “Egmont”. In the Big Band Room, ANU, Peter Karmel Building, School of Music, 3pm, Sunday, May 8. Tickets $5 at the door.
