police

A TEENAGER will face the ACT Children’s Court following a threatening phone call made to Calwell High School yesterday (Wednesday, 3 February).

Around 1pm, a staff member at Calwell High School received a threatening phone call causing the school to be evacuated as a precaution whilst the veracity of the threat was investigated.

As a result of police investigations, the teenager was arrested and conveyed to the ACT Watch House.

Detective Acting Station Sergeant Marcus Boorman said the apprehension of the teenager should serve as a warning to others who may be tempted to engage in this type of activity.

“There is nothing funny about a threatening phone call that causes unnecessary distress, fear and use of valuable police resources,” Station Sergeant Boorman said.

“Be assured police will investigate and prosecute these matters with full vigour.”

The teenager will face court at a later date.

Investigations into a number of other threatening phone calls received across Canberra during the past week are ongoing.

Police are warning that it is an offence to make such threats and every effort will be made to identify those responsible. The offence carries heavy penalties.

Police are urging anyone who could assist police to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via act.crimestoppers.com.au. Information can be provided anonymously.

Police remind people they should not report crime information via Facebook and Twitter pages.
