Take part in naming Canberra’s places

THERE’s a new opportunity to join the ACT Place Names Committee, who have been involved in naming suburbs such as Strathnairn and Macnamara, says Minister for Planning and Land Management Mick Gentleman.

Mick Gentleman
“This is a fantastic opportunity for Canberrans to become part of the committee that provides advice and recommendations to the ACT Government on the naming of new suburbs, roads and other public places such as parks,” Minister Gentleman says.

The current committee was involved in the naming of Malcolm Fraser Bridge as well as streets within the new suburbs of Gungahlin and Molonglo Valley, including Throsby, Moncrieff and Denman Prospect.

“The committee also consults with the Canberra National Memorials Committee in regard to the naming of public places on designated national land,” Minister Gentleman says.

“Committee membership is a voluntary position, and successful applicants are appointed for a three year term. Ideal candidates for membership should have strong backgrounds in Australian history, local heritage and Indigenous or multicultural affairs.”

Information via planning.act.gov.au. Nominations close on Tuesday, June 27.
