Drunk driver smashes into tram

A drunk driver was more than three times over the limit when he ran a red light and crashed into a Canberra tram.

Police say the 50-year-old man from McKellar was driving a Mitsubishi Triton along Northbourne Avenue near Dickson yesterday (July 7) when he drove through a red light and collided with a light-rail vehicle.

The man, who was un-injured, returned a positive breath test recording a reading of 0.189.

Police suspended the man’s licence and he was charged with drink driving, disobeying a red traffic arrow, and driving into the path of a tram.

It’s the second tram accident in Canberra in matter of weeks, with ACT Policing urging drivers to take care on the roads.

“This was an incredibly fortunate outcome, but it could have easily been our 11th road fatality this year,” Superintendent Road Policing, Corey Heldon said.

“If you are caught doing the wrong thing, you will face the full consequences of the law.”
