Heather wins CAPO’s top award

PRINT maker Heather Burness has won the CAPO Fellowship, the organisation’s top award, which was presented at a gala night in the National Archives.

Enthusiastic well-wishers and visual art-lovers packed the Archives’ entrance hall and exhibition space to celebrate, to enjoy performances by Canberra artists and to take part in the CAPO art auction, where items donated by Canberra artists and businesses were sold to raise funds for the business-arts organisation’s work in supporting artists.

The Reading Room CAPO London Exhibition Award, which gives an Australian artist exposure to the London art marketplace, was won by Canberra visual artist Linzie Ellis.

CAPO president Neil Doody said that in 2011 the Reading Room had become CAPO’s first sponsor of a national award, “an exciting development”.

The Singapore Airlines Travel Award went to sculptor/painter Wendy Teakel, while the Rosalie Gascoigne Memorial Award, sponsored by Community CPS Credit Union, went to metal smith Sean Booth.

The Sage Legal Services Award went to visual artist Blaide Lallemand and the Eckersley’s Materials Award to visual artist Kate Barker.

Photographers Karen Dace and Eleanor Cotterell jointly won the Capital Insurance Brokers Award, and the new DMV Consulting Award went to Textile artist Amy Kerr.

Another new award, the National Press Club of Australia Emerging Artist Award, went to video artist and photographer Margaret McHugh.

The only performing arts winner for 2011 was Jigsaw Theatre Company, which received the Workplace Research Associates Award.
