March 2011: When Vicki went shopping at work

THINK twice when you complain that nothing ever happens in Canberra. The festive season lingers into March with the Centenary projects speeding up.

For loyal Canberrans, they may soon find themselves learning an old song proposed by Robyn Archer, the Canberra Centenary creative director.

For those environment-conscious, Canberra is caught by a dilemma following the failure of “Zero Waste 2010”. To use waste for energy or for compost, that is a question.

It won’t be a question, though, to look chic while cycling. Canberra photographer Trish Smith brings “style over speed” from her trip to Europe, and will hit the streets each week in search of the most stylish Canberrans on two wheels.

Some great photos just come without notice. As “CityNews” photographer Silas Brown was taking pictures of Chief Minister over MLA Vicki Dunne’s shoulder, he didn’t expect to snap Ms. Dunne shopping for Ikea furniture on her laptop during Question Time.

Not just photography, Canberra even has a film industry, on a tiny scale. The 15-minute short “Where are the Warriors” was filmed in  and around Canberra with the assistance of the ACT Government. Another short film  “Tegan the Vegan”, made by Canberra animator and director Marisa Marti,  has won a place in  the 2011 Flickerfest, Australia’s No. 1 short-film festival.

Canberra never allows entertainment to go too far. In a petition tabled in the Legislative Assembly, 31 Canberrans jointly called for action to Sydney-based broadcaster Chris Smith’s infamous “dead refugee” competition, which aired on local Canberra station 2CC.
