Griffin’s ‘lost notes’ found in storage

Portrait of Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin, Castlecrag, Sydney, 27 July 1930. National Library of Australia.
LOST notes, hand-written by Walter Burley Griffin in 1911 to accompany his entry into the Australian national capital design competition, will be returned to the Federal Government tomorrow.

Centenary of Canberra history advisor Dr David Headon, located the 29-page document in storage. The document also included five hand-drawn diagrams by Marion Mahony Griffin.

This is the last original component of the Griffins’ competition entry and, as per the terms of the 1911-12 competition, the entry belongs to the Commonwealth.

ACT Chief Minister Katy Gallagher will return the document on behalf of the ACT Government in a formal handover tomorrow at Parliament House.

The documents will be placed on display as part of a National Capital Authority exhibition at Parliament House and later stored at the National Archives of Australia.
