Seasonally happy music tomorrow

THE Llewellyn Choir will be  in seasonally happy form as it presents “Choral Gold: A Treasury of Choral Music”  tomorrow night.

accompanied by Canberra Youth Orchestra, the choir will present songs and arias spanning the 16th to 20th centuries, covering the Renaissance, baroque, classical oratorio, opera and musicals.

Highlights will include selections from Orff’s “Carmina Burana,” Mendelssohn’s “Elijah,” Bernstein’s “Chichester Psalms” and “West Side Story,” Lloyd-Webber’s “Phantom of the Opera” and Borodin’s “Polovtsian Dances” from which the musical “Kismet” derived.

From the connoisseurs of choral singing there will be Barber’s “Easter Anthem” and “Sure on This Shining Night,” as well as 16th and 17th century music from Palestrina, Monteverdi, Victoria and Purcell, including the “Funeral Music for Queen Mary,” as the Choir draws on its past repertoire to present a varied program.

Rowan Harvey-Martin, music director of the Choir, says, “This is a good opportunity for us to sing our favourite pieces, and it’s good to be able to expose the young orchestral musicians to some of the great choral works.”

It’s been a busy year but it’s not over yet. In December, the Llewellyn Choir will participate in Canberra Youth Music’s Christmas concert at Stage 88.

The Llewellyn Choir, “Choral Gold: A Treasury of Choral Music,” Llewellyn Hall, 7:30pm, Saturday November 17 , bookings to 13 2849 or tickets at the door.
