Driver flees Downer crash scene

POLICE are seeking witnesses to a collision in Downer after a driver fled from police earlier this morning.

At around 12.20am police say they saw a silver Mitsubishi Lancer driving the wrong way on the roundabout at the intersection of Davenport Street.

Police started to chase the car but the driver accelerated away, reaching approximately 120km/h in a 60km/h zone.

The driver turned onto a number of suburban streets before running up a gutter onto the Downer oval, and into a low fence. The collision occurred around three minutes after the driver first fled from police.

Police were unable to catch the driver but members of the public reported seeing a woman running from the scene down Melba Street shortly after the crash.

Anyone who can assist police with their investigation is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or viawww.act.crimestoppers.com.au.
