MOTORISTS are invited to guard their number plates against being stolen by taking part in Project Safe Plate on Sunday.
Between 10am and 2pm police officers will fit vehicle plates with tamper-proof screws at the Belconnen shopping centre’s fresh food car park, off Joynton Smith Drive. The service is free.
The officer-in-charge of Belconnen Police Station, Sgt Jeff Knight said: “Stolen number plates are a huge inconvenience for motorists, and cost the government thousands of dollars to replace every year. Installing these screws is a great way to protect your vehicle.
“We invite everyone to come down, get the tamper-proofs installed on their vehicle and take the opportunity to get advice from police about other ways to protect their property”.
In the last financial year, 216 number plates were reported stolen in the Belconnen district.
Project Safe Plate launched earlier this year in Gungahlin as a whole-of-ACT coordinated effort. This is the first time the event has taken place in Belconnen.
